Pre-listening
- Make a very good use of your preparation time. Study the task. This means speedily read, re-read, and generally remember the related questions and information in the data file; scribble the key words and circle to highlight the important information.
- Predict and scribble your thinking in short phrases or simple lists; visualise the setting or scenario with your imagination.
- Avoid distractions: noisy candidates, walking invigilators, etc.
- make sure you can hear clearly. Voice your concern if you have any.
Listening
- As you listen, focus on one task at a time. You need to make sure you can not only listen to the audio task but also able to cross-check the written task specification, and write notes at the same time. (Yes, your eyes, ears, hands, and mind are working and coordinating intensively!!!!! So, more practice to prepare for the exam is the secret for your success!)
- It is better to take more notes than it is necessary, mark your notes and scribble the keywords with a pencil.
- Listen to and think for ways to relate ideas to complete the task. Try not to take notes in paragraph form.
- Take notes by extracting information or ideas and turning them into phrases: noun phrases, verb phrases, or prepositional phrase. Do not try to write everything down.
- Listen for clues: repeated phrases, stressed syllables, and some word spellings.
- Be calm but be alert! So you can avoid being nervous and making careless mistakes, such as getting incorrect spellings or wrong messages.
Post-listening
- Write the full answer.
- Review and proofread your answers .
- Wipe off or clean up your scribbling, unrelated writing, or marking from the answer booklet.
- Get ready for other tasks.
